Poems and stories of our lives.....
The Bus Stop Dog/ Lucky's Story
There's that white dog again...We had seen him roaming the neighborhood for at least 4 weeks. He was a walking skeleton. Dirty and had big, sad eyes.
Someone had chopped off his tail, and not surgically done. I would break my neck trying to get outside with a bowl of food any time I saw him come into our Cul de Sac. But he would never come near me. I would leave the food, and would finally see him devour it. Then he was gone again. I always cried.
One Friday I was off, and gardening. There he is! Muddy shoes and all I fly into the house for dog food, and put it at the street. I sat on the porch and watched him eat. We sat there looking at each other, a whole front yard between us, for almost an hour. I can't believe he's still here! Oh my gosh! Here he comes! Inching down the driveway, never losing eye contact with me. My eyes welled up with tears as he made 3 circles and laid down on the towel I had put on the porch, and closed his weary eyes...He knew he was home.
Honey, we have a new dog! I was sobbing when I called my husband. He knew who I meant. My son named him Lucky. Lucky Boy. Sweet, silly, fastest dog on earth, and always on squirrel patrol. Sleeps under the covers...and greets us each day as if he thought we were never coming back! His eyes always shining with love and appreciation.
One day soon after he adopted us, we were walking him in the neighborhood. Some little kids came running up excitedly..."you have the bus stop dog!" The bus stop dog? It seems he would wait at the bus stop with the little kids each morning. He trusted them all along. And finally, blessed ME with his trust. It's been 3 years now. His past is a mystery. His future is secure. He is the love of our lives. We are the lucky ones! Heidy Clark 8/12/2008

Bird Nerds......
Some people call us "Bird Nerds",
but they don't seem to see! This makes us smile, we laugh with them, and proudly we agree! We seek out other folks like us who live and breathe their birds. We share ourselves, we learn from them, and hang on every word. Bird Nerds share a special bond and feathers are our glue. It's in our blood and in our hearts, not something we just do. For those who fail to understand, they sure are missing out! On all the fun and all the joy, for us there is no doubt! We devote our lives to parrots, and won't give up the fight to spread the word and educate, you see, Bird Nerds UNITE! Some think we're nuts to care so much, but we say "that's ok" You want us call us "Bird Nerds?" Go ahead, MAKE OUR DAY! heidy clark 2/19/2010 Forever Home Before I came to live here, I don't remember much. I guess I choose to not look back on times that were so tough. It was kind of cold there in a room left all alone. Hungry, bored, and nervous, in that other home. I really do forgive them, I guess they didn't know exactly all my needs and wants, and love I have to show. But they were kind to give me up, and you should see me now! My eyes are bright, my feathers shine, a big new cage and WOW! The food is good, my cage is clean, and I get lots of playtime! They talk to me, they scritch my head, and all these toys are all MINE! My family now they care enough to meet my basic needs. But, OH, they give much more than that! and I wish they could see... that I wish ALL my feathered friends had Parronts like I own! I'm a very lucky, happy bird in my FOREVER HOME!! heidy clark 5/26/07 Home is where the heart is! |
Fly
Little one. Precious bird. Hatched into a world that is not your own. Learning to live your life in a way nature never intended. Captive. Cursed by your own beauty, and by the human desire to own what we cannot be ourselves. Who are we to deny you your God given wings? When we are not even worthy of the gift of watching you soar... We try hard to give you more than we have taken away, but we will always be beneath you, whether or not we let you fly. heidy clark 10/9/2010 God loved the birds and invented trees. Little & Peaches/ a love story....
Chapter 1
They called him Comet. A short, stocky guy from the other side of the tracks. But even his boyish good looks couldn't hide the signs of his hard knock life. He almost came to accept the loneliness, as if it were meant to be.
Another car ride. Was this the fourth? Fifth? He couldn't remember. Whatever was in store for him this time, he could take it. Tough guy like him.
He seemed to see no need to win her over, this new one. She called him Little. Little Bird. At first he was embarrassed. There were other guys around ,you know. But as time went by, he mellowed. His tough exterior slowly peeling away. This old broad's not too bad, he thought. He decided to stay.
An amazing transformation took place. The thug they called Comet was now part of a family. Sure, he had it pretty good, and at the end of the day, he couldn't complain. But when he kicked back in his cage at night, he couldn't help but wonder...is there something more?
Chapter 2
She was a new chick in town. He could hear her in the other room. It would be a long 30 days before they met. In the mean time, he could only imagine. From the sound of her voice, he guessed that she was pretty. Maybe too pretty for his taste. He had been warned that the pretty ones can bring you heartache. Had his share of that.
Still, he thought of her. She sounded young and scared, and he found himself wanting to console her. He heard her name...Peaches. Sweet, he thought, and wondered what color she was. His days became filled with daydreams about her, his curiosity overwhelmed him. What would she think of him? Would she laugh at his name? Would she like his lavender tail? Had she preened with other guys? The questions ate away at him until he could hardly sleep. The long days dragged by so slowly. But he knew it would soon be time, and he had already decided...she was the girl of his dreams.
Chapter 3
He swears to this day that the room lit up when she came through the door. The wait had been long, and hard, and he hoped he wouldn't say something stupid. She was just as he imagined. The face of an Angel! Her feathers gleamed in the sun, her colors amazed him. Like no girl he had ever seen. Their eyes met briefly, and he could feel a spark! He would later say that it was love at first sight. But she turned away quickly, as if embarrassed.
It was then that he noticed that there was something different about her. Not just the fact that that she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever laid eyes on, but something more. Her little legs didn't seem to work quite like his own. The way she struggled to climb around her cage made him want to chew through his bars to help her. Her handicap made her all the more special in his eyes, and he vowed to take care of her forever. He now began the task of winning her heart...
Chapter 4
The competition was steep. She was, after all, the only girl in the neighborhood. With her looks, he feared she would fall prey to someone who's intentions were not as honorable as his own, and he could not even bear the thought of her preening around. He would have to be diligent on his watch, but take care not to seem too possessive. He did not want to scare her off.
The months passed by, and he savored every minute he got to spend with her. The nights seemed endless as he waited anxiously for their cages to be opened each morning. He could only watch as she struggled to climb to her perching place on top of her cage. She accepted no help from him, an independent lady, and even this was endearing. The girl had class.
There they sat for hours on end. Talking about life, love, hopes, and dreams. As he slowly gained her trust it became apparent...she only had eyes for him. He felt as if his heart would burst! He longed to soar around the Aviary with her, and show her all the wonderful things her new home had to offer. But she had not yet learned to fly, another aspect of her handicap. He was patient. She was worth waiting for. But the anticipation of the first time she would allow him to feed her was was almost too much to bear.
She was interesting, amusing, vulnerable and beautiful. The total package. He felt like the luckiest guy on Earth!
Chapter 5
Their days were enchanted. The sun filled Aviary was a perfect place for a blossoming romance. In a room filled with beaks and feathers, they had no awareness of anything but each other. Even the newcomers, handsome as they were, held no interest for Peaches. One day he mustered up the courage to move closer on their perch, brushing against her beautiful wing. He shivered from excitement as she made no effort to move away. They spent hours each day singing to each other, and she listened intently to his stories of his past life in other homes. He showed off for her, flying around the room, making impossible landings on precarious perches, and warding off the advances of a much bigger bird, who seemed to be flirting with her. Then one day it happened! He glanced behind him in mid air, to make sure she was watching, and she was not where he had left her. For a second it scared him. Then he saw her! As if she were an Angel, she flew to right to him. She could fly. His girl could fly! Her tangled little feet no longer had to hold her back from exploring her new and beautiful home. His heart was pounding with pride and happiness for her, and the world seemed to open up just for them.
Every night they parted, but pressed themselves against their cage bars to be close enough to hear each other breath. Each one content in the knowledge that morning would allow them to be side by side once again. He dreamed of her, and she of him, and he felt he was ready to make his next move.
Chapter 6
He had anguished over the decision long enough. Today was the day. It just had to be. Up till now, it had all been so innocent. He knew she cared for him, she made that very clear. And she knew he was her friend. Puppy love. He wanted more. He wanted to declare his love from the top of the highest tree, and let her know his intentions. To love, honor, and cherish...till death do they part.
He had to be careful. She was young, and inexperienced, and he did not want her to interpret his advances as disrespect. It had become increasingly hard to find a secluded spot in the Aviary, and he longed for time alone with her.
They chatted away the afternoon, and even snuggled to ward off the chill from the windows. He could not get enough of the sound of her voice, and she hung on his every word. As the sun began to set, and the shades had been drawn, he leaned slowly towards her. His heart beat so wildly that the feathers seemed to ruffle on his chest.
Then, ever so slightly, her beautiful beak parted, and she accepted the food he offered. From that moment on...he knew she was his. Mama's Shoes!
Mama put her shoes on! We all know what that means! She's going out the front door, there's so much out there to be seen! If we hurry up and beat her we may be able to escape. It's worth just being hollered at if we can make a break! It's not as if we run away, just out to see the world. Well, Rocco will go up the street to try to find some girls! But me and brother, Buddy, we don't go too far. We promise when you call to us we'll come back in the yard. There's always a new place to pee where other dogs have been! Just give a few minutes ,mom, before you call us in! Please let us smell the cats out there, OUR yard they dare to cross! Oh c'mon Mom, just let us out to show those cats who's boss! We saw you put your shoes on! You know you cannot hide! You're going to the mailbox! Just let us go outside!! heidy clark 5/2010 |
